The five Great Lakes
provide us with some of the finest drinking water in the world. They are the largest surface freshwater system on earth, shared by more than 40 million people who have the privilege of saying “This is my water.”
Yet in 2009, Great Lakes cities discharged more than 41 billion gallons of untreated sewage mixed with rain water into the lakes. For 14 or more days in the 2010 beach season, 112 U.S. Great Lakes beaches were unfit for swimming. More than 185 invasive species threaten our ecosystem – and a new invader, such as the Asian Carp, is discovered every 28 weeks.
Join the Alliance for the Great Lakes in our efforts to preserve and protect Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario.
